I was very upset at CA for not including a bit of red in the vanilla Rome 2. There is no way I would actually pay for a blood DLC when the base game is underwhelming. So I did a bit of digging and found this little mod that add some blood effect when units are struck by missiles. Missiles only though.
Enjoy if you want some red for free. Just go to the link below and it is in the bottom of the first post, labeled as Close_Combat_[missile weapon hit effect].zip.

They can't due to age ratings, and its not like its exactly expensive :P

They did put blood color (even for elephants and horses--which current DLC cannot do) and missile blood effect back in MTW2--for free. That means bloody clothes and blood spurt effects are not restricted to 18+. If CA had implemented those as a default feature, as per MTW2, it would have had much more immersive effect and made the game more enjoyable with relatively small resources spent. Let those who revel in gore enjoy paid decapitation/dismemberment DLC--all I wanted was to see some splotches of red in my ancient battle.
I know 3$ is not much BUT, there is bigger issue here--chiefly, to not support a company's policy to intentionally reduce past features, just so they can sell it with money. There is also CA's huge lies about the vanilla game's quality itself. No way I am going to support that. Just personal principle.

It slowed my gameplay way down, so I'll leave it be for a while

You are right. I do feel some lag when full stacks are fighting. Best to wait for it to get fixed.
