It's a good thing you got it as a gift. The game isn't worth paying for in the current state it's in. I still find the campaign AI is generally too passive. I'm not sure if they fixed the battle AI so AI units do not just stand there waiting to get bombarded to pieces by artillery, will have to test this again later. And I was still shocked to see transport ships sailing through land recently, this was also not patched despite being highlighted by Angry Joe from Day 1. Overall I'd say it's a playable and completable game that would satisfy new players to the TW series, but won't be enough to meet the expectations of veteran TW players. But I'll let you be the judge of that.
Some differences from Rome 1:
-You can now recruit units in the field and don't need to be in a town to do so
-All armies must be led by generals. You cannot recruit units in towns or in the field without generals
-Armies can assume several stances on the campaign map, like forced march (move further than normal movement points allow but with the risk of always being ambushed when attacked), setting up ambush or fortifying a position for extra defense.
-You can personally take control of naval battles now
-Land units can travel on water by automatically becoming transport ships but will be at a disadvantage in battle with naval ships.
-Amphibious landings are now possible on the battle map to reinforce units already fighting on land
I don't play mods but heard that Radious is pretty good. Generally, I don't think there's any OP units/civs/tactics. No one is immune to the rock paper scissors rule, flanking attacks and artillery. I believe elephants were already nerfed so they now cannot destroy an entire army all by itself. If I face enemy elephants, I easily solve the problem by bombarding them with artillery even before they get close to my lines.
