I agree with EoJ, the best way to learn about the new features is to play main campaign. You've probably already started one, but the factions I suggest playing in order to learn about the game Rome and the Iceni.
Rome will let you easily field strong armies capable of beating just about anything the AI can throw at you as you get a hang for the game, while the Iceni are perfectly positioned to stay out of (well, most of) the chaos so that you can conquer, expand and research to your hearts content without drawing the attention of any of the major factions like the Seleucids, Egypt, Rome or Carthage.
