I'm having a lot of trouble getting a hoplite phalanx to work- can anyone give me an idiot's guide to using them?

My mercenary hoplites and veteran hoplites work just fine as heavy inf, without phalanx turned on.

I can only give you my point of view from campaign as in MP I always prefer pikemen.

On open ground I don't use the phalanx formation as it reduces unit speed. I just treat them as swordsmen and let them charge at enemy infantry who are chasing after my skirmishers.

I use phalanx formation mainly when storming enemy settlements and heavy street fighting. The phalanx bonus to defenses definitely makes up for less mobility, in tight quarters.

How do you make them attack though? They break apart and turn off phalanx when you tell them to attack a unit (not even charge)

Use the old Rome: Total War trick of giving a movement order behind your target. Once they engage the unit they begin fighting automatically. Occasionally they will remain in Phalanx when you give them attack orders if they are close enough to the enemy, but move orders are still the most sure fire way of making sure they hold their phalanx formation.

until a patch fixes it treat the phalanx formation as a defensive formation. If you get charged head on by something go phalanx, for anything else use the normal way. While in formation your units give and receive little in the way of damage, effectively locking the two or more units in place. Use the phalanx to fix units like heavy infantry so you could flank them with something else. Once your opposing unit loses formation cancel the phalanx and charge in.

As long as you do not let them run, you can tell them to attack the enemy without breaking phalanx formation. Even in combat they will retain the formation.

Just let them walk to their destination.
