In my last campaign, as well as what I'm reading elsewhere, city and siege battles are still the main type of battle in RTW2.
I thought of a concept to change the focus from cities to battlefields - this may be way too simple, but perhaps someone with modding experience may actually be able to incorporate that into the game.
Main idea
Regions may be captured by two means:
- Capturing the regional capital.
- Capturing key points, or victory points (VP), in the region. Depending on the size of the region, each has 2 to 4 VPs. VPs may be strategic, such as hills and/or civil, such as farmland or mines.
VPs are captured either when an army stays on top of them in raiding mode for 5 turns or when a battle is won on top of the VP. When all VPs are captured, the capital and thus the region surrenders to the player.
Characteristics of VPs
VPs are only fortified when there's an army on top of them in fortification mode. Especially strategic VPs are easy to defend, as the defending army may start on a hill or on the right side of a river. Civil VPs are essential for the wellbeing of the capital, but are not special battlefields by themselves. To enforce this, capturing a civil VP does mildly affect the capital directly: i.e. when farms are captured, lose 1 food. (Don't want to overdo them).
What do you think? Would this increase battlefield type of battles and increase strategic options?
